Italo Marchini is one of the most respected and versitile conductors in the modern opera world and well known as a Verdi specialist. He was born in New Jersey of an Italian family from Parma and studied conducting at New York's Juilliard School and Westminster Choir College. While a student he worked with Carlo Maria Giulini, Erich Leinsdorf, Riccardo Muti, and Leonard Bernstein. He studied conducting with Vincent LaSelva of New York Grand Opera and Joseph Flummerfelt of the New York Philharmonic.
Marchini began his career at North Bergen Opera and soon was invited by Gian Carlo Menotti to conduct at the Spoleto Festival. He has conducted much of Menotti’s work and has assisted him in publication. He was named Music Director for Jerome Hines' Opera Musical Theatre International (OMTI) and is the founder of Coro Lirico and Orchestra d'America. He has conducted over fifty different operas rangeing from the standard classics to contemporary masterpieces.
Marchini made his New York Lincoln Center debut in 1992 conducting Rossini's opera Mosè.
He is assistant to Maestro Eve Queler of Opera Orchestra of New York in Carnegie Hall where he has worked with Carlo Bergonzi, Aprile Millo, Vesselina Kasarova, Samuel Ramey, Jennifer Larmore, Renee Fleming and others. He has worked in Boston, Indianapolis, Charleston, Los Angeles, etc, as well as Copenhagen, Prague, Edinburgh, Dublin, Lucerne, Florence, Rome, and Beijing. Marchini is principal guest conductor for the Teatro Lirico d'Europa.
Maestro Marchini has made a specialty of unperformed works and led the American premieres of Silvano (Mascagni), La Molinara (Paisiello), Pinotta (Mascagni), Messa di Gloria (Rossini), and Chant des Déportés (Messiaen).
The Metropolitan Opera frequently asks him to judge their National Council Auditions.
He remains active with Opera Orchestra of New York, and this season will lead La Boheme and collaborate on Dom Sebastien of Donitzetti, the Rake's Progress in Paris, and Les Troyens in Geneve.
